Physical Science 20 - April 20

Today in class, students handed in Assignment 1.1 on solving word problems.  As well, I checked Homework 1.2 on manipulating formulas.  After that, we got started on learned about how to measure quantities of heat.  We learned about specific heat capacities and what changes in heat energy depends on.  This was all related by a nice formula that allowed students to see the heat energy gained or lost is dependent on the substances mass, its temperature change and its specific heat capacity.  This was all covered in the powerpoint called Measuring Quantities of Heat which is located in the Heat Folder of the Physical Science 20 Course Notes link.  We covered slides 1-11 and students then worked on Assignment H1 for the rest of the class.  When we got to some examples though of using the formula, we only did examples 1, 2, 5, and 7.  I will check Assignment H1 tomorrow and we will move on to look at what happens to heat in a phase change.
