Physics 30 - Feb 3
Today we looked at a particular tricky example
called a twin object problem. This type of problem involved looking at
the motion of two separate objects that are linked somehow. We ended up
developing new equations based on kinematics and would have to employ the
quadratic formula to solve these new equations. Assignment 1.3 was
assigned but students will be given some time on tomorrow to work on it
Physical Science 20 - Feb 3
Yay Friday! We made it through the first week of school everyone. Congrats! Today we went over the homework from yesterday. The answers are posted online in the answer folder of the chemistry unit in the Physical Science 20 course notes. We then learned today how to name hydrated compounds and acids. Both types of compounds have very specific rules for how to name them. This was covered on slides 61-67 of the Nomenclature powerpoint. Students were assigned Homework C5 and C6 today. They were given a lot of time to work on it today in class. We will take this up on Monday and move on to organic nomenclature. Have a good weekend everyone.

Physics 30 - Feb 2
Today I introduced the kinematic equations to students and we went through examples 3 -
6. The kinematic equations apply in situations where an object is undergoing
constant acceleration. The notes were all taken from slides 13-21.
Students were assigned Assignments 1.1 and 1.2, however they do not have
textbooks yet to do these questions. Students can access the pdf version
of the textbook found in the Physics 30 course notes link if they want to get
started on the questions. I will handout textbooks next week after
schedule changes end. Tomorrow we will be doing a particularly difficult type
of kinematic problem called a twin object problem.
Physical Science 20 - Feb 2
Happy Groundhog day everyone! Even though we have 6 more weeks of winter ahead of us, that doesn't mean we can stop learning. Today we went over Homework C1 and C2. The answers are posted in the Answer Key folder of the chemistry unit in the Physical Science 20 Notes link along the right hand side of the webpage. We learned today how to name compounds involving ions that have multiple charge as well as compounds that involve polyatomic ions. This was covered on slides 43-60 of the Nomenclature Notes powerpoint from yesterday. At the end of class, students had time to work on Homework C3 and C4. We will take this up tomorrow and then work on naming acids and hydrated compounds.

Physics 30 - Feb 1
Today we
got started on the new Physics 30 course which meant we started refreshing our
knowledge of motion. We started with Unit 1 on Kinematics and cover
slides 1-13 of the powerpoint called Unit 1 Notes. Students followed
along with a set of handout notes that they picked up today in class.
Tomorrow we will finish this review and begin to look at the kinematic
equations. Students can start Assignment 1.1 at home. I am not able to hand out textbooks yet however I do have the textbook online. It can be found here. Use this at home until we can get the physical version of the text.
Physical Science 20 - Feb 1
Hello everyone! Yesterday we spent our time getting through the course outline and discussing classroom expectations. Today we started into chemical nomenclature. This is a review of Science 10 and the concepts you should have learned in Science 10. We learned how to name elements, covalent compounds and even simple, binary ionic compounds. This information was all covered on slides 1-42 in the powerpoint labelled Nomenclature Notes. Students followed along with the handout I gave them today in class and just filled in the blanks from the powerpoint. At the end of the class I assigned Homework C1 and Homework C2. We will go over these tomorrow. Tomorrow we will look at ionic compounds where the ions can have multiple cationic charges as well as compounds that involve polyatomic ions.

Physics High School Exam Competition
Today in class I mentioned about 2 exams that students can write in the spring. These exams review the content covered in all physics classes in high school. They award scholarships to be put toward physics classes in university. For more information on these exams, please go to the following website - High School Physics Exam Competition.
If students are willing to write either or both of the exams, please let me know. In the spring(March or April), I will need to order the correct amount of exams.
