Physical Science 20 - March 5 & March 6

Yesterday, we did a couple of examples related to molar conversions.  We did an example where we converted to the number of molecules given the mass of a substance in grams.  We also learned how to find the mass of a certain number of atoms of the substance.  These two examples involved 2 steps, first converting our given information into moles and then converting from moles into the required.  Students then had a chance to work on Assignments C18 & C19.

Today students continued working on Assignments C18 and C19.  Both of these are due on Monday.  I have also scheduled a quiz on the mole for next Wednesday, March 11.  This will be on Assignments C18 and C19.  Have a great weekend everyone!

Physics 30 - March 4

Today in class we learned how to draw scale diagrams to represent what happens when you add vectors together.  We also learned about how to break vectors into horizontal and vertical components.  This involved using the trig functions of sin and cos.  We then figured Pythagoras Theorem and the tan identity.  Assignment 2.1 was assigned and we will go over it tomorrow.

Physical Science - March 4

Today in class we began to look at how to convert information using the idea of the mole.  This involved using the molar mass to convert from the mass of a substance to moles of the substance and visa versa.  As well, we can use Avogadro's number to convert from the number of particles of a substance to the moles of the substance and visa versa.  We just did a couple of examples (slides 16 and 17 in the powerpoint called The Mole) outlining the process.  We will work through a couple of more examples tomorrow and then work on Assignments C18 and C19.

Physics 30 - March 3

Today we started our 2nd unit on vectors.  We learned about direction systems, types of vectors and doing vector addition and subtraction.  We didn't quite get to doing scale diagrams.  We will get there tomorrow.

Physical Science 20 - March 3

Today in Period 2 we finished our lesson on Math by learning about the rule for adding and subtracting numbers.  We also learned a different method for converting units.  This method is called dimensional analysis.  It is more difficult at the start but as soon as you master the method it makes conversions much simpler.  Students finished by working on the Metric Conversion Homework handout.  We will go over this tomorrow.  This method just takes much practice.

In Period 4, I checked the Metric Conversion Homework.  We then began to learn about the concept of the Mole and the purpose it serves.  We also learned what molar mass is and how to calculate it for compounds and elements.  Students we assigned Assignment C17 at the end of the class.  We will go over this tomorrow.

Tomorrow in class we will start looking at molar conversions.

Physical Science 20 - March 2

In period 2 today, I checked Assignments C15 and C17.  We then started into learning about Math and some of the skills we will need from math to excel in science.  This involved looking at units and the metric system as well as learning about how to count and use significant figures in calculations. We just learned the rule for when you mutliply and divide numbers.

Physics 30 - March 1

Today students did their first in class assignment.   Tomorrow we will begin Unit 2 on vectors and motion in higher dimensions.  Please bring the notes package if you want them for class tomorrow.
