Physical Science 20 - Feb 6

Today in class we learned how to use the Stock naming system when encountering compounds that involve elements that can have multiple cationic charges.  This system involves using Roman numerals to denote the positive charge that the ion has.  We also discussed the differences between this and the classical systems which utilized the latin names of the elements.

We also learned how to name hydrated compounds.  This wasn't much different than what we have already done.  We just have one more step of adding a name for the water molecules that are in the compound.

Students spent the majority of class working on Assignment C3, C4 and C5 which are all going to be checked for completion on Monday.

On Monday we will look at how to name acids as well as starting to learn how to name organic compounds.

Physics 30 - Feb 5

Today in class we finished up our review of physics 20 by looking at graphing and relationships.  We then continued on and started looking at kinematics in one dimension.  Definitions of vectors and scalars were given along with position, displacement and distance.  We did a couple of examples that allowed us to see the difference between distance and displacement.  Tomorrow we will finish this up by looking at a position time graph and understanding the information that you get from it.  Students will get their textbooks tomorrow as well as getting some time to work on Assignment 1.1 and 1.2.

Physical Science 20 - Feb 5

Today in class I checked Assignments C1 and C2 and we quickly went over the answers.  For students who didn't get some of the answers or who were absent today, check the answer key folder in the Physical Science 20 Course Notes link.  We continued on today learning about polyatomic ions and how to write formulas for them.  Students had the rest of class to work on Assignment C3 which involved naming and writing formulas for compounds involving polyatomic ions.  This is not due tomorrow however due to some issues I had in class getting information to the students.  This will be due on Monday along with Assignment C4 which we will learn about tomorrow.

Physics 30 - Feb 4

Today we started into the notes.  It was a review of the skills you should have learned in physics 20/physical science 20.  We learned about units, significant figures, scientific notation, and problem solving skills.  This was covered on slides 7 -22.  Tomorrow we will finish this by looking at graphical relationships.

Physical Science 20 - Feb 4

Today in class we learned how to name and write formulas for molecular compounds as well as for simple ionic compounds between only 2 elements.  This is a review from grade 10 science.  Remember that molecular compounds occur when you have 2 non-metals and ionic compounds occur when you have a metal and a non-metal.  Students then spent the rest of class working on Assignments C1 and C2.  These 2 assignments will be checked tomorrow.  Tomorrow we will learned about naming and writing formulas for compounds that involve polyatomic ions.

Physics 30 - Feb 3

Today in class we went over the course outline and then talked about class expectations.  We then did a simple introductory activity that got us thinking about some ideas with motion and measurements in science.  We will take these ideas and apply them to the study of motion.  Students picked up all the handouts for the 1st unit today as well and we will begin this tomorrow.

Physical Science 20 - Feb 3

Welcome to the blog for the course everyone.  Today in class we went over the course outline as well as what you can expect from the class in terms of procedures and such.  After that we got started on chemical nomenclature.  We started with the Nomenclature powerpoint and got all the way to slide on a list of common substances.  Students need to know these common substances and what formulas are associated with these substances.  I have put this list in the chemistry folder of the course notes. It is called Common Substances List.  Please print off and bring to class tomorrow.

Tomorrow we will move on and learn about naming molecular compounds as well as simple ionic compounds
